One thing you have to remember about the compound is that it has a narrow therapeutic window, meaning that the therapeutic dose and the toxic dose are very close, hence it is easy to overdose. Overdose is danger because barbiturates suppress respiration and actually cause you to stop breathing, your lungs to fill with fluid (pulmonary edema) and your blood pressure to fall. This can be fatal. 

Again, it depends on the dose.
