How can I make sure the contractor actually does the work and doesn’t take the money and run ?

Make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured (also great if they have been doing business in the area 5 years or more).  If its a really large job (5k-10k or more) then you set up a payment schedule. They could still take the first payment and run but at least you are out only a piece of the cost, but if they are licensed, bonded and insured then its highly unlikely they would take the money in run.

Check his reputation, years in the business and don't pay him in advance, except for materials.

    Are they bonded.

Do you have a written contract.

What's their rating on the BBB?

You don't pay all the money up front, but pay in stages and wait until the work is completed before you pay the final amount

Make sure that they have good reviews or recommendations from friends and neighbors.Make sure you have a signed contract with them.

    A contract of course.

Have a good contract, with very clear expectations for everything (budget, workmanship, dates, what's covered & required etc)

Ask people in your neighborhood for the name of their contractors
