We all have endogenous retroviruses included in our genomes - also up to 10% is bacterial DNA.

1. Some can kill or sterilize people who can't resist 'em. That can change allele frequencies if the resistance is based on genes.
2. Endogenous retroviruses. Yup, we're stuck with some. That's viruses changing our genetic material right there.

they don't "modify out" genetic material. They just make human cells produce virions.
The role a virus plays is that it stops some people from procreating (by killing them), which gives the other people a better chance at producing offspring
