The climate. Southern California has a Mediterranean climate with little snow at the lower elevations. It's like living in Italy or southern France on the coast. Also the relative closeness of high altitudes and snow and skiing and other winter sports attracts lots of people.

Climate, gold rush and employment opportunities there.

It is all part of the big plan to improve the nation. Get all of the undesirable people to move to California and then quietly set the state adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

California was a nice place until liberals took over.

It has a nice climate and tons of beaches. Plus, there was there was the promise of gold. Also, you'll notice most of the largest cities in the world are close to either an ocean or a major river. There are a lot of reasons for that.

On top of that, there's immigration both from Hispanic countries and Asia both of which attempted to settle California long before whites.

And then Hollywood and silicon valley attracted more people.

World War 2.  Look it up.  That is when and why it first became most populated state.

Pretty much worldwide, coastal areas with good climates tend to attract dense populations. California is a large state, taking up a large swathe of coastline with some of the most temperate climate in the US (and arguably in the world).

Nice climate.  Where I live, it has snowed exactly once during my lifetime, and then only for a few minutes.  Motorcycles can be ridden here year 'round.

It's the largest of the coastal states that has a temperate climate.  Historically, the rush to California began with the gold rush of the 1840's.  Another period of great population growth was the 1930's, when the "Okies" fled the dustbowl in the center of the country to go to California.  Movies and TV contributed to a California craze in the 50's, and in recent decades there has been a lot of migration into California from Mexico and Central America.

California is now losing more people to other parts of the US, than it is gaining from other parts of the US.  Fiscal, social, and environmental difficulties may be the reason.

It's because lots of people moved there.

That is as far west as pioneers could go without crossing an ocean.
